Expert Relocation Services for Relocating to Paris, During the 2024 Olympics

100 years after the 1924 Games, Paris will host the Olympic Games from 26 July to 11 August 2024, and, for the first time, the Paralympic Games from 28 August to 8 September 2024.

With most events taking place near the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, and other iconic city monuments, the backdrop of the summer Olympics will be spectacular for spectators and athletes. Movers, however, are bracing for record levels of road congestion.

Navigating Paris traffic rerouting

How to Move to Paris During Moving to Paris During France's Busy Olympics Period

From 1 July to 15 September, about 185km of the Paris road network will have a lane reserved exclusively for accredited individuals. Moving companies will not be allowed to use these lanes. In addition, the government will establish security perimeters around each competition venue to ensure safety for residents, athletes, and visitors.

The volume of traffic that will be rerouted because of these measures will have major repercussions, not only in the heart of the capital, but throughout the Île-de-France region (particularly during the opening ceremony on 26 July, when much of the city will fall inside a temporary traffic blackout zone).

Two out of three security zones open to moving companies

Each Olympic venue will have three security zones, activated simultaneously, starting two and a half hours before the start of the first event of the day until one hour after the end of the last event.

SILT zone

The first zone, known as SILT (Sécurité Intérieure et Lutte contre le Terrorisme – Domestic Security and Counter-Terrorism), will secure the area immediately around the venue. This zone will be controlled by the police and the army, and only athletes, officials and ticket holders will be allowed entry. Removal services will be prohibited.

Red zone

A secondary red zone will allow cyclists, pedestrians and motorised vehicles provided they have a pass. Passes will be issued by the Paris police, in the form of QR codes, via the LUJOP (Logistique Urbaine du quotidien durant les Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques – Daily Urban Logistics during the Olympic and Paralympic Games) online platform (available from 10 May 2024). Passes will be compulsory, specific to the applicant and renewable daily.

Professional removals companies will be allowed to carry out moves in red zones, but only if they are essential and the zone has not been activated for the purposes of a road race (marathon, cycling, etc.). During such events, all vehicles are banned.

Importantly, the onus is on the customer to provide proof that their move is essential. They must also supply proof of their residence in the zone. The removals company will then apply to carry out the move on their behalf.

At the time of writing, the city authorities have not indicated how long it will take to process removals requests. This will likely be clarified with the launch of the LUJOP platform. In the meantime, AGS expects that applications will need to be submitted two to three weeks before the move date, much like applications for parking permits.

Blue zone

Finally, the blue zone will allow access to all vehicle types, including removals trucks. Here too, moving companies will need to register in advance on the LUJOP platform and show a QR code to enter. According to the Préfecture de Police, exceptional traffic permits should be issued within 48 hours of application.

More complex household goods moves

Removal times, particularly in the Paris region, could be extended, with moves sometimes requiring an extra day and more manpower, or having to be carried out in several stages (packing one day, moving another). Moves may also begin earlier to accommodate the traffic congestion.

Removal and relocation professionals will need to be particularly vigilant and far-sighted to navigate this complex environment. AGS Paris is organised and seeks to minimise your inconvenience by offering:

  • Secured parking at night (24/7 manned security)
  • Assistance for parking permit and access permit (red and blue zones) applications
  • Moving assistance
  • Redelivery if a move is not possible or incomplete

If your move is postponed, we can also offer furniture storage and warehousing solutions via our depots in Gennevilliers and Luigny.
